Weezer is an American band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1992, and since then it has become one of the most iconic acts in alternative rock and power pop. The group is led by vocalist, guitarist, and main songwriter Rivers Cuomo, who has established himself as the creative mind behind almost all of the band’s songs. Over the decades, Weezer has built a musical identity marked by catchy choruses, heavy guitars, and melancholic melodies, blending influences of punk, pop, new wave, and even heavy metal into a unique style that feels both unpretentious and highly calculated. Weezer has also become known for its productivity and peculiar sense of humor, often poking fun at its own image and positioning itself as outsiders in the rock scene. In 2019, the band surprised fans by releasing the “Teal Album,” composed entirely of covers of 80s classics, including a much-discussed version of Toto’s “Africa,” which went viral and proved the group’s ability to connect with internet culture and contemporary audiences. That same year, they also released the “Black Album,” a darker and more electronic project that contrasted with the lighthearted nature of the covers album. More recently, in 2021, Weezer released two very different records: “OK Human,” an intimate album recorded with orchestral arrangements, and “Van Weezer,” an explicit tribute to the hard rock and heavy metal that influenced Cuomo in his youth.

Weezer’s legacy goes beyond sales numbers and awards. The band is a touchstone for an entire generation of artists and fans, whether through its nerdy style, lyrics mixing irony and confession, or the ability to craft simple songs that stick in listeners’ minds. Weezer has built a rare long-lasting career, balancing nostalgia with experimentation, and remaining relevant both to the audience that discovered them in the 90s and to new generations who encounter their music through memes, social media, and soundtracks.
