More information about the Package

Planet Hemp is a Brazilian band formed in the early 1990s, known primarily for its musical style that blends rap, rock, hardcore, and elements of reggae, as well as for its provocative lyrics and outspoken advocacy for the legalization of marijuana. The band emerged in Rio de Janeiro in 1993, conceived by Marcelo D2 (Marcelo Maldonado Peixoto) and Skunk (Luís Roberto Cruz), and quickly gained attention both for its aggressive sound and its bold political and social stance.

The original lineup included, in addition to Marcelo D2 and Skunk, musicians such as Rafael Crespo, Formigão (bassist), and Bacalhau (drummer). After Skunk’s death in 1994 due to complications from AIDS, the band moved forward with BNegão (Bernardo Santos) taking over vocal duties alongside D2. Over the years, the lineup changed several times, but figures like D2, BNegão, and Formigão remained iconic members of the group.

Planet Hemp’s debut album, Usuário, was released in 1995 and is considered a milestone in Brazilian rock of the 1990s. The record made a significant impact with tracks like “Legalize Já,” “Mantenha o Respeito,” and “Phunky Buddha,” which addressed themes such as the criminalization of marijuana, police violence, and prejudice against marginalized youth. The success of the album earned the band a large fan base but also drew negative attention from authorities and the conservative media. On several occasions, the band members were arrested under accusations of promoting drug use, which only increased their public visibility and support among fans.

Musically, Planet Hemp has always stood out for its hybrid sound, combining the heaviness of distorted guitars and fast-paced drums of hardcore with the fluidity of rap, hip-hop beats, and occasionally, elements of Brazilian funk and reggae. This mix also reflected the cultural diversity of urban Brazil in the 1990s, especially in Rio de Janeiro, where the group originated. The band also collaborated with other important Brazilian artists and helped to elevate some of them, including Marcelo D2 himself, who would go on to have a highly successful solo career starting in the 2000s.

The band’s second album, Os Cães Ladram, Mas a Caravana Não Pára, released in 1997, continued their critical and rebellious trajectory. The album featured tracks like “Queimando Tudo” and “Contexto,” further cementing the band’s identity as a voice for a disillusioned and marginalized youth. The album expanded the group’s musical experiments and demonstrated a maturation in both production and lyrical content, with sharper critiques and a more deliberate political discourse.

In 2000, Planet Hemp released their third studio album, A Invasão do Sagaz Homem Fumaça, which featured an even denser and more introspective sound in some tracks, such as “Stab” and “Excuse Me.” The influence of American rap, alternative rock, and 1970s funk groove is clear in this work. The criticism of the penal system, social inequality, and police violence remained present, but the album also introduced more existential and personal themes. The sound was more polished, and many consider this one of the band’s most ambitious efforts.

Amid controversies, media pressure, and internal conflicts, Planet Hemp announced their breakup in 2001. Each member pursued individual paths: Marcelo D2 launched a successful solo career, blending samba with hip hop; BNegão formed BNegão & Os Seletores de Frequência; other members engaged in different musical projects or stepped away from the spotlight. Even after disbanding, the band’s influence endured, and their albums remained reference points for new generations of Brazilian musicians seeking to merge rebellious attitude with musical innovation.

In 2010, the band reunited for a commemorative tour that covered various cities in Brazil and was met with massive public enthusiasm. This reunion reignited interest in the group and led to a return to creative activity. After a few years of occasional shows, in 2022 the band released a new album, JARDINEIROS, their first collection of original songs in over two decades. The album once again brought politically charged lyrics, focusing on contemporary issues such as the environmental crisis, authoritarianism, racism, and state violence, all delivered with the same rebellious energy but now with a more mature perspective. The sound was updated, featuring modern production and current influences, while maintaining the band’s original identity.

Throughout its career, Planet Hemp has stood out not only for its music but also for its political stance. Their advocacy for marijuana legalization was not just a libertarian flag, but a symbol of resistance against authoritarianism and institutional hypocrisy. The band consistently criticized the role of the police, the state, and the media in the criminalization of poverty and the social control perpetuated through the war on drugs. Their lyrics touch on themes such as racism, social inequality, censorship, urban violence, and cultural alienation, establishing a deep connection with urban youth and politically engaged students.

Moreover, Planet Hemp directly influenced the emergence of other Brazilian rap-rock bands and helped bridge once isolated scenes like hip hop, rock, and reggae. Their importance goes beyond music: the group helped create space for a more direct and confrontational discourse within the Brazilian cultural industry, serving as an example that it is possible to combine entertainment, social criticism, and political engagement without losing relevance or popular appeal.

In Brazil, their presence helped to demystify many taboos and influenced public debate about drugs, freedom of expression, and social justice. In a country marked by deep inequalities, Planet Hemp’s art remains a tool of resistance, protest, and cultural affirmation. Their trajectory shows how music can be used to challenge power structures and propose new ways of seeing and living in the world.
